Why Telegram Privacy Settings Matter
Telegram offers a remarkable range of privacy controls — far more granular than most messaging apps. But these protections only work if you actually configure them. Out of the box, some settings may be more permissive than you'd prefer. This guide walks you through every key privacy setting so you can take full control of your account.
Accessing Privacy & Security Settings
On mobile, go to Settings → Privacy and Security. On desktop, click the hamburger menu and select Settings → Privacy and Security. This is your control center for everything covered in this guide.
Phone Number Visibility
By default, Telegram can expose your phone number to people you chat with. To restrict this:
- Go to Privacy and Security → Phone Number
- Set Who can see my phone number to Nobody
- Set Who can find me by my number to My Contacts or Nobody
Once you've set a @username, people can message you directly without ever knowing your phone number.
Last Seen & Online Status
Sharing when you were last online can reveal more than you intend. Control this under Last Seen & Online:
- Everybody — Anyone can see when you were last active
- My Contacts — Only saved contacts can see this
- Nobody — No one can see your last seen status
Note: If you hide your last seen from someone, you also won't be able to see theirs — a deliberate trade-off by Telegram.
Two-Step Verification (2FA)
This is one of the most important security features you should enable. It adds a password on top of your SMS verification code, making it much harder for someone to hijack your account:
- Go to Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification
- Tap Set Password and choose a strong, unique password
- Add a recovery email address in case you forget your password
Without 2FA, anyone who gains access to your SIM card (via SIM-swapping attacks) could log into your Telegram account. Always enable this.
Active Sessions
Telegram allows you to be logged in on multiple devices simultaneously. Regularly review which sessions are active:
- Go to Privacy and Security → Devices (or Active Sessions)
- Review each session — you'll see the device type, location, and last active time
- Tap any session and select Terminate to log it out remotely
- Use Terminate All Other Sessions if you spot anything suspicious
Secret Chats vs. Regular Chats
Understanding the difference is crucial for privacy:
| Feature | Regular Chat | Secret Chat |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | Cloud-based (server-side) | End-to-end encrypted |
| Syncs across devices | Yes | No (device-specific) |
| Self-destruct timer | No | Yes |
| Screenshot notification | No | Yes (on Android) |
| Forward messages | Yes | No |
Start a Secret Chat by opening a contact's profile and selecting Start Secret Chat.
Additional Privacy Tips
- Profile Photo: Set visibility to My Contacts or Nobody under Profile Photos settings.
- Forwarded Messages: Under Forwarded Messages, set to Nobody to prevent your name from appearing when your messages are forwarded.
- Groups & Calls: Control who can add you to groups or call you — set both to My Contacts to reduce spam.
- Passcode Lock: Enable a passcode within the app itself under Privacy and Security → Passcode Lock for an extra layer of local security.
