Getting More Out of Telegram
Telegram is packed with features that go way beyond basic messaging. Many users stick to the basics and never discover the tools that make Telegram genuinely powerful. Here are 15 features worth knowing about.
1. Schedule Messages
Write a message and then long-press the Send button (or right-click on desktop) to select Schedule Message. Choose a date and time, and Telegram will send it automatically. Perfect for sending messages across time zones or planning announcements.
2. Chat Folders
Organize your chats into custom folders like "Work," "Family," or "News." Go to Settings → Chat Folders and create folders with specific chats or types (e.g., all channels, all unread). This is a game-changer for anyone with dozens of active chats.
3. Saved Messages as a Personal Cloud
Your Saved Messages chat (accessible from the main menu) is essentially a private cloud storage space. Forward links, images, files, and notes to yourself. Everything is synced across all your devices instantly.
4. Silent Messages
Need to send a message without pinging the recipient? Long-press Send and choose Send Without Sound. The message arrives, but no notification sound plays — great for late-night messages to people in different time zones.
5. Spoiler Text
Wrap text in spoiler tags to hide it until the reader taps it. Select text and choose the Spoiler formatting option. Perfect for movie plot reveals, game spoilers, or surprise announcements.
6. Self-Destructing Messages in Regular Chats
While Secret Chats have built-in self-destruct timers, you can also delete messages after a set time in regular chats using the Auto-Delete feature. Go to a chat, tap the contact name, and find Auto-Delete Messages — set it to 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month.
7. Multiple Accounts
Telegram natively supports multiple accounts on the same device with no need for a second app install. Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, and select Add Account. Switch between accounts instantly.
8. Custom Notification Sounds Per Chat
Tired of the same notification tone? You can set a unique notification sound (or even a custom audio file) for individual chats. Open the chat, tap the name at the top, and find Notifications.
9. Inline Bots
Use bots directly from any chat without switching to them. Type @gif funny cat in any message box to search for GIFs, or @imdb Inception to pull movie info — all inline, without leaving the conversation.
10. Pinning Multiple Messages
In groups and channels, you can pin multiple messages. The most recent pin shows at the top, but users can tap it to browse all pinned messages. Great for FAQs, rules, or important announcements.
11. Global Search Within Chats
Tap the search icon and enter a keyword to search across all your messages globally. You can also open a specific chat, tap the search icon there, and search only within that conversation — filtering by media type if needed.
12. Custom Themes
Go to Settings → Appearance → Chat Themes to choose from built-in themes, or browse and download community-made themes from Telegram itself. You can even create and share your own custom color scheme.
13. Proximity Alerts in Groups
In groups, you can share your live location and set a proximity alert — Telegram will notify you when another group member comes within a specified distance of you. Useful for meetups or coordinating in real-time.
14. Slow Mode for Groups
Group admins can enable Slow Mode to limit how often members can send messages (e.g., once every 30 seconds). This reduces spam and makes large group discussions more manageable. Find it under Group Settings → Permissions.
15. Translate Messages
Telegram has a built-in translation feature. Long-press any message and select Translate to convert it to your preferred language — no need to copy and paste into a separate translation app. Enable it under Settings → Language → Show Translate Button.
